Will AI Revolutionize the Medical World? How ChatGPT Helped Diagnose My Child’s Mysterious Rash

As a busy mom on the go, there’s nothing more nerve-wracking than when your kids fall ill, especially when it happens during a road trip. Recently, two of my three children developed a mild fever that broke unusually quickly, followed by an unexpected rash.
Given the circumstances — it was the middle of summer, and we had been spending a lot of time in car seats — I wasn’t sure if it was just a heat rash or something more serious. Like many parents, I turned to Google, but the search results only left me more confused (and a little freaked out!)
Feeling stuck, I decided to try something different: I turned to ChatGPT. I uploaded a picture of the rash (with their faces excluded for privacy) and asked for its input. To my surprise, ChatGPT didn't just jump to conclusions. Instead, it asked me a series of questions to gather more information.
Here’s the list of questions it asked me:
When did the fever start, and how long did it last?
What was the highest recorded temperature during the fever?
Did the fever respond to medication, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen?
When did the rash appear in relation to the fever breaking?
Can you describe the rash? (e.g., is it raised, flat, red, or bumpy?)
Has the rash spread to other parts of the body, or is it localized?
Are there any other symptoms accompanying the rash, such as itching, pain, or swelling?
Have your children been exposed to anyone with similar symptoms recently?
Have your kids been vaccinated for common childhood illnesses, such as measles, chickenpox, or rubella?
Were your children wearing tight or restrictive clothing, which could suggest a heat rash?

The ChatGPT Diagnosis Journey
After answering these questions, ChatGPT analyzed the information and suggested several possibilities, including common childhood viruses, allergic reactions, and heat rash. It recommended monitoring the rash and symptoms closely and suggested that if the rash spread or new symptoms developed, a visit to the pediatrician would be prudent.
While ChatGPT's advice was not a substitute for professional medical care, it provided a starting point that was incredibly valuable. This experience got me thinking: Could AI be the future of quick, accessible medical assessments?

AI is already making waves in the medical world. From radiology to personalized medicine, here’s a snapshot of how AI is currently being used:

They provide suggestions based on patterns in the data they’ve seen, which can be helpful for preliminary guidance but should never replace professional medical advice.
